Medical Records and Documentation to Carry

Patient Guide

Medical records and documentation matter more when treatment happens abroad, because the clinic will not have access to your history unless you provide it. A useful set includes a summary of your condition, a current medication list with doses, recent test results, and any relevant imaging with the reports that accompany it.

Ask the clinic which documents it needs, which should be translated, and whether electronic copies are acceptable. Confirm how far in advance they should arrive, since review takes time and may determine whether an in-person visit is scheduled at all. Carrying paper copies as well as digital ones is sensible given how often access to files becomes awkward while traveling.

Records generated during treatment matter equally. Ask what you will be given to take home, whether it is available in English, and whether the clinic can send details directly to your own physician. Ask how long the clinic retains records and how you would request them later, since that becomes difficult to arrange from another country.
