Keeping Continuity with Follow-Up After Returning Home

Patient Guide

Follow-up after returning home is the part of overseas treatment most often arranged too late. Before leaving, establish who to contact with questions, through which channel, in what language, and how quickly a reply can be expected. Email, messaging services, and scheduled video calls are all used, and clinics differ in what they offer.

Ask what would be assessed after you return, at what intervals, and who carries out that assessment. If tests are involved, ask whether they can be performed locally and the results sent to the clinic. Ask what the clinic would consider a reason to contact them sooner, and make sure that guidance is written down rather than only discussed.

Involving your own physician makes this considerably easier. Ask whether the clinic will send records and treatment details directly, and in what language. Ask what documentation you should carry with you when you travel home. Continuity across two health systems depends on arrangements made in advance far more than on effort applied afterward.
